| Rick Stein's French Odyssey |
Price: £11.99
Rick Stein's recent television series, where he floated down the Canal du Midi through Languedoc Roussillon has supposedly help lift the property and touism market. We can understand why, because the series, and this book that accompanies it, brings out the best of Languedoc's peasant fare. This isn't the cuisine the French like to associate with France (chi-chi fare decorating a place) - but rather Rick has focued in on the really simple country food that Languedoc is best at. The recipes are easy to make, and you'll find all the ingredients in local markets. |

All admirers of Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence and Bon Appetit!, and Carol Drinkwater's Olive Farm series will be absorbed by this book which is anything but a pale imitation. |

| Elizabeth David Classics: "Mediterranean Food", "French Country Cooking" and "Summer Cooking" |
Price: £11.21
Publishers Grub Street are to be congratulated on re-issuing this single volume collection of Elizabeth David's first three books (A Book of Mediterranean Food, French Country Cooking and Summer Cooking), which have too long been out of print in hardback. The paperbacks are useful but tend to fall to pieces with repeated use. Moreover, even at full price this represents something of a bargain. The charm of the originals, with the evocative drawings by John Minton and Adrian Daintrey, remains intact. |

| Beers of France |
Price: £11.95
This is the ultimate guide to beer in France, even if it was published in 1998 and is not always fully up to date. Why ? Because there's no other serious guide to beer in France, as French publishers don't take beer seriously, and most of what's published in French is simply appallingly poor. Besides, I don't know of a French beer writer who masters the subject half as well as Woods and Rigley do... |

| That Sweet Enemy |
Price: £16.50
This tome of nearly 700 pages of text about the relations between Britain and 'that sweet enemy, France' (a phrase from a sonnet by Sir Philip Sidney) is like a huge pudding stuffed with goodies: I have rarely read a history book whose brilliance is sustained over such an immense time-range - from the reign of Louis XIV to that of Jacques Chirac. The authors - the husband an Englishman, his wife born in France - handle the story with skill, and efficiency, and they frequently employ a joyous felicity of phrase to point up differences and similarities between England and France. |
