During your holiday, you will be ideally based to discover the incredible unspoilt region of the Languedoc.
Languedoc sightseeing is rich and varied, rather like it's landscape. The region is made up of miles, or should I say Kilometres, of gentle coastline with a rugged hinterland.
It's clean sandy beaches are perfect for family holidays, with resorts ranging from traditional fishing villages to new purpose-built resorts. Inland is quieter, with acres of vineyards in the Corbieres and Minervois and mountain walks in the Haut Languedoc.
The Gard Provencal is on the doorstep of Provence. From the summit of the Aigoual to that of the Lozere, the spectacle is a permanent and grandiose one.
An invigorating breeze brings air to the deep forests and the steep gorges. The streams, from falls to cascade, are a welcome pretext for the hiker to stop and rest his feet.
This is a land full of character, fashioned by men of character, for whom the sharing of their skills has become a source of wealth.
Nimes is the capital of the Gard department of the Languedoc region of France.
Nimes, important alike for its industries and for its archaeological treasures.
The Roman heritage, Nimes is a lively town of tradition with many cafes and restaurants. The Bambou forest of Anduze, the steam engine of the Cevennes, the rivers.
Fishing, hicking, swimming, horse riding...
The Camargue Regional Nature Park lies at the southern end of France, below Nimes , between Arles and Montpellier , with the river Rhone bordering it's eastern limit.
An area of wetlands, pastures, dunes and salt flats the Camargue is a largely untamed natural reserve, inhabited by egrets, pink flamingos and ibises. The pastures provide gazing for sheep, and small white horses, ridden by the "gardians" (i.e. cow-boys), a hardy community who traditionally lived in thatched huts ("cabanes"), and still play their part in keeping Camargue traditions alive.
Viaduct de Millau
The longest viaduct in Europe and one of the largest in the world, with piers 342 metres apart!
Montpellier is one of the liveliest cities in the south of France, and the capital of the Languedoc Roussillon. It's lively pace is probably because about a quarter of it's population are under twenty five. This is largely because it is a large university city, with students coming from all over the world to study there.
The centre of activity is the Place de la Comedie. Known locally as "L'Oeuf" ("the egg"). The Place de la Comedie is a large "egg" shaped "place" with buzzing bars and cafes offering hundreds of tables and chairs all perfectly positioned for an afternoon, or eveing of people watching.
Between Spain, Andorra and Ariege stand the Pyrenees, a wonderful place to spend a holiday with its warm seas, sandy beaches and fresh mountain air.
The Catalan city of Perpignan can be accessed easily and you can even be in the centre of Barcelona in a few hours drive. |
