The Languedoc-Roussillon has much to offer as a holiday destination, including fabulous beaches and enough sightseeing in the Languedoc to keep you going for many, many holidays to come.
In this sun-drenched corner of the south of France, you'll find sandy beaches lapped by the Mediterranean sea, wild open spaces in the Cevennes hills, monasteries and castles for languedoc sightseeing, and vineyards where you can taste some of the best Languedoc wines around.
Montpellier is one of the liveliest cities in the south of France, and the capital of the Languedoc Roussillon. The centre of activity is the Place de la Comedie. Known locally as "L'Oeuf" ("the egg"). The Place de la Comedie is a large "egg" shaped "place" with buzzing bars and cafes offering hundreds of tables and chairs all perfectly positioned for an afternoon, or eveing of people watching.
Less than an hour and a half from Montpellier, you can feast your eyes on such destinations as Sete, the Pont du Gard, Carcassonne, and the Canal du Midi. And even closer to Sete, just on the other side of the Thau Lagoon, authentic fishing villages, oyster farmers, and vineyards welcome visitors year round.
The Walled City of Carcassonne, in the Aude area, is Europe’s largest fortified citadel and a popular place to visit. |
