LOCATION
The apartment is on the first floor of a secure gated residence, comprising 34 dwellings, a few minutes walk from the beaches, town centre and good supermarket.
Le Barcarès is a lively seaside resort, once a tiny fishing village, with 9 kilometres of golden sand ‘ Blue Flag ‘beaches and many shops, bars and restaurants.
In the town there are banks, a post office and a well staffed tourist office who can give advice on local attractions and activities.
A few minutes walk from the town square is crazy golf and a huge fun fair held all summer. Visit the 3 weekly markets, held in the town square and on the road to the beach, to sample local fresh seafood and other produce, and to soak up the colourful atmosphere.
The town is on the southern most point of L’Etang de Leucate, an inland lake separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land, providing a natural sanctuary for wildlife, flamingos and watersports enthusiasts.
Nearby is also Port Barcares with a large marina and Le Lydia, a huge ex.
passenger/steamer ship, now converted to a casino and night club which also has an excellent restaurant (evenings only).
There are several horse riding stables and a Go Karting track within the local vicinity.
Being so close to the Spanish border, the town has a strong Catalan heritage. The Pyrénées were the stronghold of the Cathars and this bloody history is evident in the ruins of the many Cathar castles sprinkled across the area.
En route to the border, only 1 hours drive, visit:
Canet Plage, another popular seaside resort and the several picturesque coastal villages of Collioure, a thriving artists colony, Port Vendres and Banyuls sur Mer.
On the A9 motorway just before the border is the “Catalan Village” where you can purchase an array of local and regional produce.
Le Barcarès is in the Pyrénées – Orientale department of the South of France, and the snow capped peaks of these mountains are never far from view and only a 90 minute drive. In the winter you can ski from the 5 good resorts.
