We just can't think of a better way to experience the beauty of Languedoc than in a canoe. Gently floating through the area's many stunning gorges, perhaps with a picnic on board, is our idea of heaven. And the canoeing here is not difficult. Most of Languedoc's rivers are relatively shallow, and any rapids are pretty tame. After a few minutes' trepidation, you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. We promise.
There are lots of rivers in Languedoc - and nearly all have canoeing centres. We've mapped out the major ones. Usually, you rent either a 1-man 0r 2-man canoe and are taken by minibus to your set-off point. You then spend the next few hours floating down-river, past sandy beaches and spectacular rock formations. Rates vary according to the distance - but are between €10 and €40.
