Montpellier is Languedoc's capital, and a truly gorgeous city. Unlike Nimes, it hasn't much sightseeing, but the pedestrianised centre of the city is wonderfully relaxed and a superb place to sit and watch the world go by, sipping a cafe.
If you're looking for holiday home rentals or villas in Montpellier itself, you'll find most are apartments. Try to get one that's as central as possible - in the 'Centre Historique' - also known as the 'Ecusson'. This is the beautiful part of the city, with great shops and restaurants. Many will be on the 3rd or 4th floor - so make sure you're prepared to climb stairs if renting one of these. Also ask whether the apartment is noisy - as the city streets on a Friday and Saturday night can be very lively.
Outside Montpellier, like most big cities, can be a little grim. The seaside towns of Carnon, Lattes and Palavas are a little tacky and run down - so if you're looking for a holiday home rental or villa near Montpellier's coast, we'd recommend going down the coast a little to Frontignan.
North and west of Montpellier the landscape is less flat and boring, with more vines and garrigue. This is an excellent region to look for holiday home rentals and villas - as you're close enough to the life of Montpellier but can enjoy the countryside too. Gignac is a good village to stay in (or visit), as is Clermont l'Herault, with its lively Wednesday market.
